Mattias is a photographer and curious urbanite born in Tallinn, Estonia. My work often mixes traditional photographic media and archive or found material to investigate lived experience. Whether looking at urban regeneration or personal histories, I am always drawn to fleeting minutiae – the seemingly obscure which helps us relate to larger ideas on a more personal scale. In my practice an old crossword or a transcript from a meeting can have the same significance as a meticulous photographic print.

This particular project was born from cooperation with 'Finding Rhythms' – a UK charity which aims to create a more engaged, employable generation of prisoners through running music project workshops in UK prisons, allowing graduates to earn a BTEC certificate. The project incorporates photographs that look outside in on Lewes Prison as well as the lyrics of the inmates, carrying their voices inside out.
